Centuries of Apple Tradition

The Altes Land region was developed in the 12th century with the help of Dutch dyke builders. This made the area suitable for fruit growing. In the 17th century, fruit growing expanded significantly. By the 20th century, the region had developed into a highly specialized center for apple production.

Today, around 10,500 hectares are covered with millions of fruit trees, most of them apple trees.

The Altes Land is located directly along the Elbe River. Its maritime climate, with mild winters, plenty of sunshine and fertile marshland, provides ideal conditions for growing particularly flavorful apples.

For REWE, this means short supply routes and highly regional products. The apples are often harvested just a few kilometers from the store and then delivered directly to the markets.

The Altes Land is an important part of the regional culture around Hamburg. Blossom festivals, farm shops and apple festivals show that regionality here is not just something found on the shelves. It is part of a tradition that has existed for centuries.
