From the Tropics Into Your Hands

As Hamburg modernized its port in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, special fruit warehouses were built. They allowed delicate tropical fruits such as bananas and lemons to be quickly sorted and stored.

Around 1910, fruit imports increased significantly. More and more fruit from overseas arrived through the Port of Hamburg and was distributed to shops across Germany.

From the 1930s onwards, special facilities were even used to transport unpackaged bunches of bananas directly from the ships into the storage halls.
