Hamburg has been a center of the fish trade since the Middle Ages. From the city, large parts of Europe were supplied with fresh and preserved fish.

An important place in Hamburg’s fishing history is the Altona Fish Auction Hall, which opened in 1896. Until 1955, it was used to sell freshly caught fish.

Today, the fish auction hall is a landmark of Hamburg’s maritime tradition and a reminder of the city’s long history of fish trading.
